Although founded back
in 1963, Trogir Town Museum opened its gate on May 9, 1966. Museum is situated
near the Northern City Gates, in a palace that once belonged to Garagnin (since
1840 Garagnin – Fanfogna) family, Venetian family that came to Trogir at the
end of the 16th century.
The palace comprises
two blocks of Romanesque and Gothic buildings, refurbished and incorporated
into the ensemble in the second half of the 18th century, after the plans of
Ignacije Macanović. The main entrance with a lobby and a staircase was situated
on the east side, in the main city street, and decorated with the Late Baroque
elements. Today the lobby houses museum temporary exhibitions, while the
permanent display is housed on the first floor (check out the map above).
The main entrance to the Museum is located in
the western part of the palace (near the Northern City Gates), which is formed around an open courtyard. The
two storey building with the stone stairway situated on the southern side of
courtyard was originally used for economic purposes. Today it houses Museum Lapidarium and the Cata Dujšin Ribar
Gallery. The old library founded by
Ivan Luka Garagnin (1722 – 1783),
Split Archbishop, is still preserved in the interior of Late Baroque building
on the northern side, along with its original wall decoration with paintings
portraying philosophers and writers, furniture and bookcases from the early
19th century. The library includes 5582 units...
Permanent display of
the Trogir Town Museum represents history of the city and its surroundings from
early prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century.
